Transforming ideas into sustainable solutions

Pinch and process design, plant digital twins, and environment programmes for refineries, chemical plants, and the governments and banks that fund them.

The way we are

Our purpose

Economics and ecology are profoundly interconnected. Economic systems depend on ecosystems for resources, energy, and the absorption of waste and pollutants. In turn, ecological sustainability is shaped by economic choices, government policies, and market forces that influence how we extract, manage and dispose of natural resources.

Ecoworks Associates exists to engage meaningfully, constructively and positively in this vital space of interdependence.

Our goals

To empower individuals and institutions to pursue growth that is both economically viable and ecologically responsible.

Our approach

By cultivating deeper awareness, we aim to spark conscious, balanced choices toward sustainable ways of living, working and relating to the world around us.

People

Empowering individuals with the knowledge, abilities and skills to realise the value of sustainable action. Helping teams work collectively on sustainable solutions, and changing the ethos of organisations so that every individual adopts being sustainable as a core value.

Practices

Incorporating sustainable principles in thought, word, behaviour and action at all levels. Including being sustainable in every aspect of the design, implementation and operation of projects and programmes.

Policies

Injecting sustainable thinking into government policy at global, national, state, regional and local levels, and urging firms and organisations to adopt policies that set the direction for all of their work.

Services

What we do

Design & Engineering

Pinch analysis, feasibility, conceptual design, simulation and process safety. The front end of a process project, from a sketch to a package that survives a safety review.

What we take on →

Manufacturing Analytics

Digital twins, predictive maintenance and roadmap discovery. We start from the decisions that are expensive to get wrong, then work back to the data behind them.

What we take on →

Sustainability

Policy drafting, delivery, monitoring and training on environment and climate programmes, run across three continents.

Why Ecoworks

What you actually get

Depth across four disciplines

Process engineering, environment and climate, strategy, and digital — each held by a named principal rather than listed on a capability slide. When a project crosses two of them, the two people talk to each other directly.

Experience older than the firm

Ecoworks was registered in 2018. The work behind it is considerably older: twenty-five years of climate advisory across three continents, more than two decades of that with the World Bank, and a peer-reviewed paper on process integration published in 2000.

A research partner in the UK

Advanced Process Integration Limited, built around the Centre for Process Integration at the University of Manchester, where pinch analysis was developed. Heat integration work that needs more depth than four people can supply goes to them.

Clear engagement models

Fixed price where scope, outcome and success metrics are settled at the outset. Managed co-development where they are not, because a number invented at that stage only gets renegotiated later. Sustainability work runs turnkey or by phase.

Environment work as its own practice

Nine engagement types across South Asia, East Asia and Africa, commissioned by governments, multilateral banks and industry. A standing practice with its own clients, not a values statement appended to an engineering firm.

Advanced Process Integration

APIL is our strategic partner in the UK, built around the Centre for Process Integration at the University of Manchester — the department where pinch analysis was developed. We bring them in on heat integration and utility system work that needs depth beyond our own bench.

Prof. Robin Smith

Directs the Centre for Process Integration at the University of Manchester and wrote Chemical Process Design and Integration (Wiley). Over forty years of industrial consultation. Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and of the IChemE, which awarded him its Hanson Medal in 1992.

Nan Zhang

Thirty-five years in refinery optimisation, hydrogen management, process modelling and utility systems, including industrial research for major international oil and gas companies. Ph.D. from the Centre for Process Integration at UMIST, now the University of Manchester.
