Written for the Opinion pages of The Hindu BusinessLine, arguing that India’s e-waste rules are aimed at the wrong outcome.

The case is that treating e-waste as a disposal problem misses what is actually in it. Reframe the policy around mineral recovery and the same waste stream becomes a domestic source of metals the country currently imports. The piece sets out what that shift would require of collection, formal recycling capacity, and compliance, and argues that government’s role belongs closer to facilitation and governance than to direct handling.
